In high school, which seems like forever ago (because it was forever ago), for one of our classes we took a personality test. I remember thinking, whatever this is so lame, like an annoying teenager would. But to this day I still remember my results. I thought it was so awesome because it was spot on. It goes into much more detail but sensitive, moody, sincere, dependable, easily frustrated, creative, and likes to have fun! Could have summed me up.
Well a couple weeks ago, for a church activity with the youth in the church I attend, we took the test. The results were the same except I lost the fun part and it was replaced with the peacemaker color. Which makes sense, I guess, since I’m an old maid now. hehe.
Can you guess what color I am? BLUE. It’s crazy how blue I am. When I read this description it weirds me out that someone could figure out the science of my personality so well. How I deal with situations, conflict as well as needs and wants. Then the next color was white. But I used to be blue/yellow. It made me realize that I want that fun, spontaneous side of me back. (There’s a free test on line you can take at Color Code.)
So the reason I bring this up, is we all know how different kids’ personalities are. Even siblings raised in the same environment with the same parents. As I struggle to discipline, reward, love and nurture these four wonderful souls. I realize that what works with one of them doesn’t work for another. I was trying to figure out what color each one is… and it’s kind of tricky. But I’m figuring it out and how to best respond and validate their needs. Striving to make their light and color be the brightest it can be. And celebrating who each person is! Some days are tougher than others. I definitely live for the small moral victories, a spontaneous hug and kiss. Or Myles’s tender but matter of factly “I like you” that melts my heart.
There’s an awesome article here for kids and personality color coding and a simpler tool below:

The other day I looked in the mirror, it was one of those loooong days that you just want to end and go to bed before it’s even dark. When 7:25 finally rolls around, “Is it bedtime yet?”
As I was splashing water on my face and cleaning off yesterday’s makeup… I looked like a zombie mommy and that’s being nice. I realized that no matter how dead I look this cute boy of mine has been giving me kisses, asking me to hold him and smiling at me all day. He loves me no matter what. That genuine love is what it’s allllll about and why I adore being his momma. Why I can handle these tough days. Why I appreciate the good days even more. Why I smile so big when I see him wave to me from the top of the slide of the playground before jumps into the tube and slides down. Why I feel like the luckiest.
All the girls were in school so we had some fun one on one time. Myles actually starts preschool (gasp!) That’s crazy! How is he old enough for preschool already?! It’s only two days a week for a few hours so basically I’ll take a shower and get a few things done and he’ll be home. No I don’t take that long of showers, what I mean is, his school time will be done before I know it! 😉
Shared this on Instagram yesterday, but he uninvited me to his birthday party… in April. I don’t even remember what it was about but I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry because it’s basically the biggest insult from a three year old. I think I laughed though.
Pretty soon he will forgive me when he realizes who brings the cake!!
We partnered with Zappos and we both got some new kicks from Superga! They’re this cool Italian brand and definitely inspired me to get out of mommy zombie mode and go on a mom and Myles date. Comfy and stylish snake skill sneaks. Not to mention Myles’s high tops have two zippers on each shoe so you can keep it tied and just unzip off and zip them back on. That’s my favorite kind of kid’s shoe… one that you don’t have to tie! I’ll probably be living in these this fall.

Last year we didn’t take any formal family pictures like we typically do. And now as I am coordinating everything I can see why it can be a lot of work to match everyone, find a photographer, talk your husband into it and find a good time for everyone. Then I remembered KISS. Keep it simple stupid. Now I can see why denim on denim was so popular. How easy is that? Everyone put on all the denim in the house!
After searching for something to wear I thought I’d share some of my favorite dresses out there just in case anyone is looking for a holiday or family photo option as well. The striped one above is from Shabby Apple. I love all their recent Winter release!
Also this grey dress is one of my favorites and under 30.
With three girls and a boy, it is pretty incredible to witness how different each little soul is. How they are born with different ways to show love and be loved. With Lola, her love language includes hugs and quality time. To fall asleep I have to be laying by her and she’s a teddy bear that wants snuggles as much as possible. She loves to sit at the table and play with Legos for hours and wants me to join her and make something together. It’s crazy how long those plastic pegs can keep her occupied. I love how Avery is different, and older now, but her love language is talking (including me listening to her for long periods of time) and laughter… with hugs still being important. That one I hope never goes away.
Is it possible that balloons can be a love language too? Cause they definitely are to this four year old…!
The air is getting crisper and I am spotting red trees in the mountains in our backyard. This transition from summer is always refreshing!
Any plans this weekend? Thanks to Camp Old Navy there’s a fantastic fundraiser on Saturday (9/19) at local @oldnavy stores called the Play it Safe event. Kids will love to learn safety from their community heroes! Meanwhile, the mommas can get their shop on cause there’s a killer sale. #oldnavystyle See you there!
